I'm The Sidekick!
Whilst we were out for our regular nightly walk around our neighbourhood, I had the sudden realisation that I'm the sidekick in a lot of peoples stories and blurted out to the family.
"I'm the sidekick!"
They, obviously, looked at me slightly confused because they had been having a discussion about something that was nothing to do with sidekicks, so I started explaining my train of thought. I told them that I'd been thinking about some things that had happened over the last few weeks, which got me thinking to things over the last few years and almost everything I have done has been to help others.
I'm the one who supports, who props others up, the one who cheers others up, the one who clears up and can be called upon last minute to do something that the others forgot. I'm the funny one that makes others laugh and tries to make them less anxious or to make them feel more settled. I'm the one who has faith in other people and lends them that faith whilst they struggle to find theirs.
I'm the one in the background doing little sidequests, that others don't have time for, whilst reminding those in the foreground that they matter, that they are on the right path and encouraging them by giving them the support (emotional or otherwise) that they need.
Take my job for example. I'm a school receptionist with responsibility for some admin too. I'm the one that supports the others, I'm the one who is in the background making things run so the others can do their work more easily. I take my job very seriously, even though it might not always seem it, because of my natural good humour and ability to make almost everyone laugh and feel at ease.
I try to make sure that if someone asks for something to be done last minute, that I do it quickly. I try to make sure that if I'm asked to do anything that I do it to the best of my ability. I try to make sure that I manage my time so that I can complete all my work before I leave each evening.
It's in my nature to nurture others. I want to make sure that they have what they need, that they succeed, that they do the things that I know they can do. I offer a listening ear or throw chocolate at those who haven't eaten since breakfast or who've had a rough day or who just need a pick me up.
I've told a couple of friends about my theory and they've thought it was a bad thing and I've had to explain that I'm proud to be the sidekick I think the friends that I mentioned this to thought it was a slur on them, which is so isn't. They've been watching too many movies where the main character treats the sidekick as an afterthought and they don't do that to me, I'm with them every step of the way helping them to chase their adventures and getting to go along with them.
Oh and let's not forget that the sidekick is almost always fabulous.
Think of Fat Amy from Pitch Perfect, Mater from Cars, Barney from How I Met Your Mother, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, Dr Watson from Sherlock Holmes, Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dory from Finding Nemo, Gromit from Wallace and Gromit... I'm telling you I've got the best role in life!
I've been feeling like the sidekick a lot too recently and reading this reminded me how important and fun being the sidekick can be! I may never be as smart as Holmes but you're right, Watson was pretty cool too, <3 thank you
